Winston was actually a Teac reel to reel tape recorder used by OMD to record early material on and was also used for backing tracks at live performances. Winston was owned by OMD’s then manager Paul Collister who named Winston after the lead character in George Orwell’s novel 1984. Winston was used for OMD’s debut live performance on 12th October 1978 at Eric’s Club and was last used at a special Farewell To Winston tribute gig again at Eric’s Club on 28th December 1979. Winston is still owned by Paul Collister.
