What are the NCHA classes?
In the early days of cutting, there was only one class, what would be called the Open today. It took a lot of courage for a greenhorn to go up against the born-in-the-saddle cowhands who dominated the competition. But as the popularity of cutting grew, a new, progressive class structure evolved which gave less experienced riders a chance to competeand winagainst their peers. Eligibility in the restricted classes is based on either a horses earnings in weekend show competition, or on a riders earnings. Heres a capsule look at NCHAs class structure. As always, for a complete explanation, refer to the Official Handbook of Rules and Regulations. ***** Horse Classes ***** Open: Any horse owned by an NCHA member may compete. There are no restrictions on breed or earnings. Typical riders are professional trainers showing their clients or their own horses, but Non-Pros and Amateurs may also show their own horses in the Open. $3,000 Novice: The horse must have less than $3,000 in weekend show e
