How was the Trustee Council formed?
Following the Exxon Valdez oil spill (EVOS) in Prince William Sound, Alaska on March 24, 1989, the State of Alaska and the United States acted as trustees to protect and assess injuries to the natural resources, as provided by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and the Clean Water Act (CWA). Initially, the Trustee Council was comprised of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the Federal Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, and Interior. The Alaska Departments of Law and Environmental Conservation joined the Council the following year.
