You can earn shells in a variety of ways. Shells can be collected during the Bonus Rounds in Adventure mode, shells are awarded after each Time Trial and Challenge game, the fish you buy in your Virtual Tank drop shells, even when the screensaver is running (as long as you have feeding and shell-collecting pets in your tank).
