Subgrade construction is the first step in building a road. It is the grading of native or imported soils that form road top, sideslopes, ditches and backslopes. This work may include the purchase of right of way, removal of fences, removal of unsuitable soils, cutting and filling to achieve proper grades, compaction of soils, replacement of black dirt on backslopes and borrow areas, rock picking, fencing and gravelling of the road top.
