What is a Watts Link?

0

A Watt’s link is a mechanical device that utilizes a bellcrank, in conjunction with two connecting links that is used to control vertical motion of the axle, while maintaining perfect lateral location, in other words the axle assembly can move up and down freely, but not side to side. The Watt’s link was invented by James Watt in the mid 1700’s, mostly as a device to be used in steam engine motion control. It has been used extensively for many decades in racing cars, dating back at least to the 1950’s, possibly before. There are two basic configurations that can be found in automotive applications: frame mounted bellcrank, or axle mounted bellcrank. We utilize the frame mounted configuration, where the pivot point of the device is securely located to the spring weight of the car.
