A shooting star is actually a small chunk of rock colliding with the Earth’s atmosphere at great velocity. These small chunks of rock can range from the size of a grain of dust to the size of a golf ball. There are many little chunks of rock in space, and as the Earth revolves around the sun, the tiny rocks hit the atmosphere and inevitably heat up, start to glow, then burn down.
