The school operates by dividing the students into four houses after they arrive for their first year. Each house is named after one of the four founders (see related question) and serves as home to the student. Once a student is in a house, they remain in it during their entire time at Hogwarts. Hogwarts operates on a point system for houses, and the house with the most points at the end of the year wins the House Cup.
