Italy has been ruled by many peoples over thousands of years. One longstanding ruler of Italy was the Roman Empire that had control for seven centuries. This reign ended when the Barbarians came and were able to destroy Rome’s Western empire because of the lack of support from the Byzantine Empire to the east.
