This appeal to the public’s chemophobia, while extremely effective in diverting attention away from proven preventive and control measures (and toward their repeller products), has undermined an unbiased review of the subject by consumers desperate for a clean, effective, non chemical means of mosquito control. Unfortunately, no such miracle cure exists. A pioneering study testing five different ultrasonic devices against four mosquito species convincingly demonstrated that ultrasound in the 20-70 kHz range used by these devices had no effect on reorienting flight by female mosquitoes either toward or away from human subjects.

How much trouble are they? What choices are there to encourage the gophers to move out to the pasture? Would running a barrel or other rolling device to flatten the mounds help in the short term? I’m afraid if I repeat the lawn-making process, the mounds will recur. Can I add dirt to the top of the lawn to level it out? I really don’t care if they live under the lawn, as long as the surface is more level. Those of us who live out in the country have this problem more than folks in the city, I am sure. Liz DeNiro Gophers are a problem anywhere there is easy digging. The good garden soil you brought in is probably much easier to dig through than the stuff in the old back yard. Gophers will live anywhere its easy. They actually are beneficial to the soil structure as they turn and mix dirt. It’s helpful to know if you are dealing with gophers or moles. A gopher will have a rounded muzzle with orange chisel teeth. A mole will have a long tapered muzzle with small teeth.
