I congratulate you for your doubt in the story. That shows your enthusiasm. But what we generally do is, we depend on narrated stories and develop openions. It is not good. If you have interest you must read the original Valmiki Ramayana version. Otherwise you should sincerely contact well read persons. To the best of my knowledge this story is an example for woman freedom. It has an inner meaning. Try to get that and then form openions. ok?
