The lead was used in porcelain as a binding agent in enameling that created the shiny luster on the tubs. Many tubs with lead are now leaching out and can harm your children. The best way to find out if you have a tub with lead is to get a lead-check swab kit at your hardware store and check your tub. If you refinish your bathtub this will stop the leaching.
