Why Didn They Ask Evans?
* * * Review: I am a big fan of British Mysteries, so when at the library I spotted one that I had not seen, I grabbed it right away. Bobby Jones (James Warwick), an abysmal golfer, and Dr. Thomas (Bernard Miles) the local GP are playing golf on the cliffs near a small Welsh village. Bobby is trying to find a ball driven much too close to a cliff edge when he sees the body of a man lying on the rocks beneath the cliff. Jones stays with the man while the Doctor goes for help. The dying man wakes briefly and says, “Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?” an enigmatic statement which proves to be his final words. When Jones tries to cover the dead man’s face, a photograph of a very pretty girl falls out of the man’s pocket. Jones thinks nothing of this, and the inquest soon rules the death an accident. However, when a number of strange events culminate in an attempt on his life, he begins to wonder what is going on.
