Who Were The Wives Of Henry VIII?
Henry VIII had six wives. They were, in the order in which he married them: 1. Catherine of Aragon, a Spaniard who had been married to Henry’s brother Arthur (since dead). Henry married her in 1509, the year he ascended the throne. She bore him a daughter, the future queen Mary I. Henry, displeased at her inability to produce a male heir and with his eye on Anne Boleyn, divorced Catherine in 1533 despite the Pope’s disapproval. 2. Anne Boleyn, married by Henry in 1533. She bore him the future Elizabeth I but, again, failed to produce that all-important (to Henry) male heir. He had her falsely accused and convicted of adultery, incest and treason and beheaded in 1536. 3. Jane Seymour did give Henry a male heir, the future Edward VI. But she died of fever soon after his birth, in 1537. 4. Anne of Cleves married Henry in 1540 but the marriage lasted just six months.
