In the book, Toto remained with Dorothy in the Castle until the Witch had been killed by melting from having a bucket of water thrown on her. In the movie, Toto escaped from the Castle and found the Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion. Tot then led the three friends back to the Castle, to rescue Dorothy.
