After you have placed your order, a genetic test kit and instructions will be mailed to you. The kit consists of a set of cheek swabs. The sample is collected by rubbing the swab in the inside of the cheek, following the instructions provided with the kit. No blood is required, and there is no need to go to a lab or medical professional to perform the test.

An ERMI sample is collected inside a dust collection device which is designed to be attached to the end of the flexible wand from a vacuum cleaner. Since an ERMI sample is a composite sample, dust is collected from the two most commonly used rooms of the property. For residential, an example would be the living room and master bedroom. Eighteen square feet (3×6 foot) should be vacuumed for a period of five minutes per room using the same collection device. Once completed the dust collector should be capped and labeled prior to submission to the laboratory. Please note that a laboratory Chain of Custody must be completed, signed and submitted with the sample.

A small bristle brush is inserted in the dog’s mouth, swirled against the inside of the cheek and the sample is collected. It is this simple collection process that makes it possible to use DNA on a large scale to help the accuracy of the AKC registry.
