How can I sew thick materials?

But even a regular carpenter’s hammer will work if you put something small and thin and hard down and hit that over the seam (a thin piece of plywood works well). (carpenter’s hammers have a convex face and leave dents) Other than that, have you adjusted the presser foot pressure?
