What is Femto-Lasik?

Femto-LASIK, also called Femto-Second LASIK or “Laser-LASIK” represents the most innovative and safest treatment method in eye laser treatment for myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. In Femto-LASIK, a so-called Femto-Second laser, in addition to the Excimer laser, is used to prepare the corneal flap. The Femto-Second laser replaces the Microkeratome and for the first time ever makes it possible for LASIK to be carried out without the use of any mechanical devices – therefore the term “Laser-LASIK”. The benefits, compared with conventional technology, consist of more accuracy and therefore more safety for the patient: Using the Microkeratome the flap thickness can fluctuate about 50 µm, however, the laser cut with the Femto-Second laser produces a totally homogenous layer with a tolerance of 5 µm at the most. After the laser cut, the surface cornea layer is flipped open and the cornea is ablated with an Excimer laser, the same as with LASIK, in order to correct the visual disorder.
