Membership in PSERS may be waived by part-time employees who have not already established PSERS contributing membership. This choice is signified by the employer submitting Member Contract Record information to PSERS and using the “ACTIVW” (waiver request) status code. To qualify for the waiver, the part-time employee must be contributing to an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). A PSERS Waiver by Part-Time Employees Covered by an IRA Account (PSRS-51) is mailed to the employee once the employee’s Member Demographic and Member Contract information is sent to PSERS. The employee must complete the waiver and return it to PSERS for processing. When the employee waives membership in PSERS, all future rights to benefits for that year are waived. Once membership has been established, a member may not waive future years.
