In the picture on the left of p. 7 of the lecture notes, the larger star marked “I” is the “new star”. Tycho was able to show it was distant, based on its lack of parallax. This new star turns out to have been a supernova, and its remnant is now observable with powerful telescopes. We’ll talk more about supernovae later.
