Will rats eat petunia flowers?

Yes I think they do. I seem to have a rat that visits my patio in the night. The last two summers I had petunias in my planters and the rat did quite a number on them. this year I tried pansies and the same thing seems to be happening. I get up in the morning and huge chunks of the flowers have been eaten off at the base of the stem. I know it is a rat as it also leaves poop at the base of the planter. I’m not sure what to do to get the rat to stop.
