Why does protein deficiency cause edema?

Normal protein levels in the blood keep the plasma fluids inside the blood vessels. If the protein levels go down (deficiency) then the plasma fluids can leak out into the tissues and cause edema or swelling. Has to do with osmosis but I think my explanation is pretty straight forward.
