How large is the eagles nest?
The nest at Shiloh has been estimated to be around 500 lbs, more or less. As the eagles return to the nest year after year, they continue to nest-build until the nest can become quite large. They build it with limbs, sticks, twigs, and grass and straw. Some nest have weighed as much as 2000 pounds. If wind, weather, or some other incident causes the tree housing the nest to fall, the eagles will begin to rapidly rebuild usually, near the old nest and more rapidly as egg-laying time approaches. They have been known to rebuild in a matter of weeks. In at least one situation, after wind and weather caused a nested tree to fall, an artificial tree was erected, much like a radio tower, and the nest was placed in the tower.
