The Broadway play was adapted for a Black cast from the (wonderful wizard of Oz) by of course, L. Frank Baum, who wrote the original novel and much of the Oz books which followed. Major surgery was indicated in the plot- to relocate things in New York, have the lead female character a school teacher(rather than a child) and being accosted by Lions from the Public Library ( a neat idea!) and so on, The late Richard Pryor starred in the title role, speaking of (Hot stuff!
