Who Needs Sousa?
Russell Seitz – Nantucket, Mass. Gosh- a bipartisan consensus! The WSJ seem to endorse the New York Times editorial entitled “Bring Back Sousa.” Yet I beg to differ. What astonished me upon flipping the dial was seeing a tranquil image of Miss Janet Jackson’s décolletage suddenly replaced by riotous scenes of colliding bodies and a cacophony of blaring sound. The aftermath of this eruption of violence led to at least one death and extensive property damage in Boston, and is suspected of inciting terrorists to attempt six international aircraft hijackings. Among the images following Miss Jackson’s interruption were attacks on the aged and infirm, and a grisly scene of canine savagery. It summons nostalgia for the moment of silence called for by the referee after Hamilton Fish Sr. broke the Yale quarterback’s neck in The Game in 1905. Who needs Sousa with entertainment like that?
