What is a Podiatrist?
The sports medicine podiatrist is a doctor specializing in the medical care of the foot, ankle, and lower leg, especially for injuries common to athletic activities. In most cases, a podiatrist is a surgeon, carrying out restorative procedures and prescribing programs of postoperative rehabilitation. Educational Requirements for Podiatrists To be a podiatrist you need a D.P.M., or Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, from an accredited college of podiatric medicine. You will have to pass board examinations both written and oral, and you’ll need to get a state license to practice. Most podiatric medical programs will require a certain number of undergraduate credits, and many will require a Bachelor of Science or related degree. Most programs also require that you take the Medical College Admission Test. In order to score well on the MCAT, you’ll need a strong background in chemistry, biology, and physics.
