What is a PC-based cash register?
A PC-based cash register runs off of a computer. At each POS station you need a PC. All the peripherals (receipt printer, cash drawer, barcode scanner, etc.) plug into the back of the computer. You can use a normal computer monitor for the application. The most important part of the register is the software. It is the software that controls inventory, rings up sales, and tells the hardware what to do. What about those “All-in-ones” registers from IBM, NCR, Posiflex? We at International Point of Sale make a conscious effort not to sell those machines as they are slower and more expensive. These machines, such as the IBM SurePOS start out on the drawing board 4-5 years before their release. By the time they actually hit the market, their processor speed is usually 1/5 of the speed of a new computer.
