What do vampier bats eat?
They eat blood, usually from sleeping domesticated farm animals, such as cattle, or wild mammals, such as deer. They don’t bite them, but make a small cut with teeth designed specifically for the purpose, and then as the cut bleeds they lick the wound, which helps keep it bleeding. Many times a bat will return to the same place and animal to feed again the next night. The injury to the animals it is feeding from is not great, and the loss of blood is small, but the chance of a secondary infection, or of receiving rabies from the bat is the major concern for the livestock owners.
