Whos minding Jerry Lewis?
At the Gene Siskel Film Center here in Chicago, they’re running a month-long retrospective on film director Frank Tashlin, who’s probably most famous for directing The Girl Can’t Help It with Jayne Mansfield. He also did some Jerry Lewis films, most notably Who’s Minding The Store?, in which Jerry stars as a surly department store clerk who always seems just one outburst away from assaulting the customers he’s trying to help. Both of these films are playing at the Film Center this week; check the Film Center’s Website for full details. Of the two, I’d definitely recommend The Girl Can’t Help It, mainly because you get not only Jayne Mansfield (as “The Girl”) but also a bunch of 1950s rock-n-roll acts like Little Richard, Fats Domino, Gene Vincent, and Eddie Cochran. Plus, it’s a new 35mm print, so it’ll look pretty good. So check that out. Also playing at the Film Center this week: some films in their Blaxploitation film series. You could catch Truck Turner or Superfly this week. Unfor
