No, Jose Rizal was NOT an atheist. He BELIEVED in God. He was against the “corrupt” friars of the Catholic Church during his time. What made things more complicated was the “union” of the church and state during that era. Friars meddled with the political affairs. So, if some Filipinos made “disparaging remarks” against the SPanish Government… the friars somehow discriminate those “subversive, rebellious people”. Rizal who wrote Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, was tagged as a “rebel”. Incidences like: Friars wouldn’t allow some Filipinos (tagged as rebels) to have a “Catholic burial” or a “catholic wedding”. Rizal wasn’t wed in church… technically Josephine Bracken and Rizal were live-in partners, they had a baby who died.. The Church people called that “fornication”, and it was a sin according to them.
