The Western Roman Empire fell in 476 AD. The Byzantine Empire is really the Eastern Roman Empire which did not fall until 1453 AD. The Byzantine Empire is just a name of modern convenience to distinguish it from the Eastern Roman Empire prior to the fall of the West.
