I would go along with lawlawni, but add something. At the very beginning of Christianity (1st century), Christianity came to the city of Rome. By the 2nd century, Roman emperors began killing Christians left and right (Diocletian, Nero, Marcus Aurelius, etc.) Constantine was converted to Christianity, he claims, by a vision and the results of a battle. It was after this that Christianity became the official Roman religion. The old saw about catholicism being born out of rome is just protestant bigotry. The truth is that early christianity was nothing like any christianity being practiced today. The first century Christians didn’t walk around with a bible in their hand. There was no bible. There were a lot of different types of Christianity practiced. Some types joined together, some were considered outcasts and were shunned, and some just disappeared.
