because of a phenomenon known as retrograde motion – the planets move across the sky and then they seem to move backwards ptolemy explained this by adding epicycles within the planets orbits we know now though that because we revolve around the sun, and the different distances of orbits, we will overtake planets, and they will appear to move backwards in our sky
