Adena’s coal mines were part of eastern Ohio’s richest coal area. Incorporated in 1908, schools, homes, and businesses were broadly becoming established and businesses prospered. In 1939, the population reached 1500 as bus companies made connections to Martins Ferry, OhioMartins Ferry, Steubenville, OhioSteubenville, Cadiz, OhioCadiz, and Wheeling, West VirginiaWheeling, alluring business from bigger cities. Historically, Adena is a history within itself and exists today 600 feet above sea level. Adena’s current population is 815 with approximately 352 families. Adena is located two miles north of U.S. Route 250, fourteen miles east of St. Clairsville, OhioSt. Clairsville, thirty miles south of Steubenville, OhioSteubenville, and nineteen miles northeast of Wheeling, West Virginia.
