What Type Of Goat Is Best?
First you need to decide what you plan to do with your goats. Are you raising goats for multi-purpose, homestead use? If so, a dairy cross will provide lots of milk, some meat and will help to control brush and weeds on the farm. If you are planning to raise commercial meat goats you will find the market currently prefers Boer cross, 50% or greater. This cross provides the greatest gain in the shortest amount of time. The Boer cross tends to have milder flavor than purebred Boer goats and the females tend to produce more milk than purebreds. Boer cross kids are usually white with darker colored heads which will bring a slightly higher premium due to the leather quality of the white hide. If you prefer to raise show or breeding stock, you will find that the purebred, registered breeds will command a higher price in the private market.
