Do Muskogee have cheifs?
The leader of a Muskogee Village is called a Mekko (mee-ko). This is not the same as a Western tribal chief. The Mekko does not wear a feather headdress or a long feathered war bonnet. The Mekko is a dignified and humble servant of the people. A man will accept the position if it is offerred to him only after significant consideration and thought about the responsibility of caring for his people and their needs. The position of Mekko is much like the position of a patriarch in an exteneded family.
