Why is urban sprawl a bad thing?

0

The larger an urban/suburban area, the more people have to travel. The more people have to travel, the more they drive or clog up public transportation, and the more they contribute to pollution, traffic, etc. Building cities up, instead of out decreases the carbon footprint of all who live there, and frees up commuting time for people as well. Large, sprawling suburban areas devastates ecosystems… A highly populated urban area surrounded by nature is a lot better than endless suburbs. New York City would be a good example of controlled urban sprawl, Los Angeles is an example of bad sprawl.

I thought it was suburban sprawl. Urban areas don’t really sprawl.
