What is the treatment for herpes?
If you have herpes, you may be treated with a short course of antiviral tablets, which are free at sexual health clinics. The herpes virus will never leave your body, but you may not have blisters again. Some people find they may get one or two blisters when they are feeling run down. Most re-occurrences are much milder than the first episode. Occasionally, some people have frequent episodes of herpes. Although its possible for treatment to be given to reduce the chances of herpes reoccurring, this has to be decided by a consultant. If youre worried about this, please ask the doctor/nurse who sees you in clinic. If you are worried about passing herpes on to a new partner through sex, there is treatment available to take regularly that may reduce the chances of this happening, but it does not completely remove the risk.
