Who are Naders Raiders?
Nader’s Raiders are investigators who work with American lawyer and consumer advocate Ralph Nader (1934– ). Nader wrote the landmark work Unsafe at Any Speed in 1965, the first major indictment (accusation) of inadequate automobile safety review standards for consumers. This book was partly responsible for the passage of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act (1966). In 1969 Nader founded the Center for the Study of Responsive Law to expose corporate safety neglect and governmental failure to protect consumers. He and his investigators helped strengthen a growing consumer advocacy movement that had its roots in the late nineteenth century, when industrial production boomed. The Raiders can be linked to the activities of writers and journalists of the early twentieth century who used the media to disclose harmful industrial practices and bring about much-needed reform.
