I have great respect for your question but what to say I believe it has been influenced by the information you grew up with. Just as we did. It was going to cost a great number of lives to invade Japan. It was obvious they would fight to the last man to defend the Emperor. Were they ready to surrender? No! Otherwise they would have after the first bomb. The Military said it was a fluke. So Truman said do it once more. By then the Emperor knew their was not choice and decided for surrender. Some of the Military advocates committed Seppuku to atone for there misjudgment. It was a horrible war that put honorable peoples against each other. (Excluding the Nazis) The salvation for that horrendous decision was America did not chose to use that weapon again when confronted with deadly conflict in Korea.
