How to make compost easily?
The absolute, simplest version is to just pile the stuff up in layers in a corner where it won’t be an eyesore, and just let it happen. It will start to shrink down as it composts; after a couple of weeks, turn it over to mix the dry bits from the outside into the middle, and let it compost some more. You don’t need a container, but if you do want to control it, you could get a 10 ft. roll of hardware cloth, attach the ends together (to make a cylinder about 3 ft. across, and put your layers of material in there. Water as you go so it’s moist but not sopping all the way through. Another kind of container to use would be a large garbage can, with 1/2 inch holes drilled all over its sides for aeration and the bottom for drainage. You use compost to enrich the soil around your plants – both by mixing it in the soil when you plant, and by scratching it into the surface of the soil around an established plant.
