Is Zicam FDA Approved?
No. Zicam Cold Remedy, which is produced by Zicam LLC (a subsidiary of Matrixx Initiatives, Inc.), is a homeopathic decongestant medication that is indicated in the treatment of: • allergy attacks • hay fever • sinus infections • the common cold Among its active ingredients are zinc gluconate, sulfur and galphimia glauca. Although the FDA does regulate homeopathic medications, this agency doesn’t scrutinize them in the same manner (or to the same degree) as over-the-counter and prescription drugs. In fact, in the eyes of the FDA, a homeopathic medication is not considered to have any pharmacological ingredients or effects. Consequently, FDA regulation of them is limited to ensuring purity, dilution and instructions for use.
