What is a Subluxation?
A subluxation complex is the dis-relationship of two or more spinal vertebrae causing one or more of the following : • Nerve irritation • Nerve encroachment (putting pressure where the nerve exits the spine) • Swelling of the joint spaces between the vertebrae • Muscle tightness or spasm of the surrounding area • Abnormal pressure or pulling on muscles, tendons and ligaments • Twisting, tilting or tearing of the intervertebral disc • Tearing of the supportive ligaments causing too much motion • Compression of the joint space allowing too little motion Sometimes this complex can be very severe (such as after an injury) and sometimes it can be long term (such as in arthritic conditions). In most instances, a subluxation complex will cause pain.
A subluxation occurs when a joint becomes misaligned and fixated, causing the nervous system to be dysfunctional. This nervous system interference may remain hidden for a long time or cause noticeable symptoms in the areas of the body supplied by that nerve. Chiropractors specialize in the detection and removal of subluxations by adjusting the spine and allowing the joint to heal. Dr. Adam is trained in the art of finding both symptomatic and asymptomatic subluxations.
A “subluxation” is a term that refers to an abnormal position or abnormal motion of some of the bones of your spine. This condition is also known as a “fixation”. The word “subluxation” is an older term that comes from the medical word “luxation”. A luxation is a dislocation of a bone. The prefix “sub” means “almost” or something less than. In other words, a subluxation is an abnormal position of a bone but is less than a complete dislocation. Back in 1895 two major things occurred. One was the discovery in Germany of x-rays by Professor Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen. For the first time in history doctors were able to see the bones inside a living person. What an amazing technology this must have been at that time! The second major thing that happened in 1895 was the “discovery” of chiropractic. Actually it was not so much a discovery as it was a renaming. You see, what chiropractors do can be traced back about 5000 years. There is archeological evidence from the ancient Greeks, Romans, Chin
A subluxation is a misalignment of the bones that house and protect the spinal cord. Any misalignment puts unnecessary pressure on the nerve system and damages the nerve supply to different parts of the body. Vertebral subluxations that are left undetected and unadjusted for many years can lead to symptoms of pain, diseases, and an unhealthy expression of life.
A “vertebral subluxation” is a complex of functional and/or structural and/or pathological articular (joint) changes that compromise neural integrity and may influence organ system function and general health. Life’s events such as accidents, sports injuries, repetitive work, and emotional stress are just some of the factors that can overwhelm the body’s ability to adapt. The joints of the spine ‘lock up’ when these sorts of events occur, limiting range of motion. Spinal joint restriction and/or misalignment results in irritation and/or pressure at the spinal nerve. Essentially, a subluxation irritates your nervous system resulting in overall malfunction of the body. Subluxations affect the health of your nerves, ligaments, discs, and joints as well as weaken your muscles and most importantly, alter the flow of energy from your brain to the rest of your body. Your brain and body cannot communicate properly if there is interference on your nervous system from a subluxation. Local sympto
