Why do painters wear white overalls?

This is a good question most people don’t even think of. As a retired Painting Contractor I guess I should know this. Back before any of us were born (and that even includes old me) houses were not actually painted. There was no such thing as a commercial paint. Everything was white washed. Since the only color was white it made sense to wear white. That way whatever they got on their clothes didn’t show. As time progressed actual manufactured paint was introduced in the late 1800’s. Now there is a myriad of colors available but the tradition of painters wearing white has lived on. That is why now painters whites usually have any color from the pallet on them. And the clean painters whites do not necessarily mean they are the best painters. Sometimes it just means they don’t work very often because they are so bad. I employed 25 guys on my crews. The very best painter I had always had a plethora of colors on his whites. But he certainly is a fantastic painter. .
