Watching your baby suffer through gas pain can be almost unbearable at times. When your baby wakes up screaming in pain with a hard belly, you may be wondering what exactly is causing the gas and what you can do about it. While all babies can suffer with gas from time to time, it usually hits the hardest around one to two months of age. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to prevent and treat your child’s gas. Swallowing air during feedings, or while crying, can lead to extra gas for babies. Eating too much too fast can also lead to gas pain in infants. For older babies who are eating baby food, certain foods may be the culprit. If you are breastfeeding, it’s possible for certain foods that you eat to upset your baby’s tummy. The best way to prevent swallowed air from causing gas pains is to burp your baby well during and after feedings. It’s normal if your baby doesn’t burp after every feeding, and breastfed babies may burp less, but if your baby is having a problem with gas it
