What is a Gli Gli?
Our Photo Gallery is named after “Gli Gli – The Carib Canoe Project” The ‘Gli Gli’ project constructed a canoe from ancient design using existing technology in Dominica and set sail in 1997 to complete a symbolic and practical journey to reunite Island Caribs with their ancestral and tribal homeland as the canoe and its crewmembers sail from Carib Territory in Dominica down the island chain, through the Orinoco Delta and into the river systems of North West Guyana, where contact was made with Guyanese Carib communities. Throughout the journey, the project and its crewmembers raised awareness and promoted discourse between Carib people and other indigenous groups in the Caribbean and South America. It also provided a unique opportunity to research aspects of Carib culture now forgotten, such as language, dance, games and traditional medicine. To learn more about the Gli Gli Project…
