The name “June bug” can refer to several species of beetle: namely, the Green June beetle (Cotinis nitida) of the southeastern United States, the Figeater beetle (Cotinis mutabilis) of the western and southwestern United States, or a genus of beetle classified as the Phyllophaga, from the subfamily Melolonthinae of the family Scarabaeidae… also known as June bugs or June Beetles. It is my belief that the June bug that you refer to is one of the species of beetle of the Phyllophaga genus, so that is the one that I will discuss. The name “June bug” is actually a bit of a misnomer. In fact, according to (www.wikipdeia.com), “June bugs” are also known as “May beetles”.
