Maria is a new storage engine for MySQL that is developed with the goal of being the default transactional AND non-transactional storage engine for MySQL. It has been in development since 2007 and was first announced at Monty’s blog. It’s being developed by the same core MySQL engineers that gave you the MySQL server and the MyISAM, MERGE, and MEMORY storage engines.
