Fantail goldfish sick?

I have a large fantail goldfish (about 3″ body and about 3 years old) in an outdoors ponds (about 300 gallons) and he frequently floats upside down in the pond. Sometimes he is lying upside down between stalks of the plants. Sometimes I am sure he is dead but when I put food in he rights himself enough to eat. Is he injured and should I try to do anything to correct this odd behavior?
