How do you find seer of older heat pump?

20 years ago the Govt was not as actively addressing SEER as they are today. If by older you mean in the range of 20 years, you can safely figure a SEER of between 8 & 10 for a matched system of the time. Last month I replaced my Whirlpool furnace & central a/c system from 1983. All of the original paperwork for that system was still around and while reading up on what I had it was stated in one of the brochures the a/c was rated at 9 SEER. Bear in mind, that was when it was new, tested under ideal laboratory type conditions, proper duct sizing etc ( which is the exeption rather than the rule ) and although both were still working fine at the time of replacement I figured it was time to step up. Not to mention the fact that the R-22 phase out is currently in motion and it`s prices have started to climb, add to that the current tax credit of up to $1500 if you buy qualifying equipment and being environmentally responsible.
